digital zoom

Digital zoom is a software based method of approximating a telephoto lens on a camera. This is done through systems such as pixel doubling that merely make each pixel in an image larger to increase the size of the intended subject. Such systems are roughly equivalent to using photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop to achieve the same result. This method of digital zoom creates images that are more blurred than the original. Newer cameraphones often achieve digital zoom by cropping away the outer portions of an image, leaving the user with a smaller photograph where the intended subject takes up a larger percentage of the final image. This method preserves image quality and is generally the preferred of the two methods.
