3s mobile music to rock the charts

3, Irelands mobile media network, has announced that its audio track downloads are now included in Irelands official singles charts. Top music tracks and full length music videos can be downloaded first on 3 before going on general release.
From this week, The Irish Music Association (IRMA) will incorporate 3s audio track sales in the mainstream music chart. The IRMA began recognising digital downloads in July 2006 for its TOP 50 Singles chart. 3, enters the charts following its launch into the Irish mass-market with 3Pay in May this year.
As a group of companies, 3 has pioneered music over mobile. In Sweden, 3 is outselling iTunes several times over with fifty percent of digital music sales. In the UK, 3 has led the development of mobile music with the first ever live gig streamed to mobile, a series of exclusives with big name bands and artists like Robbie Williams and Madonna and the launch of the first mobile only single. As a result 3s music sales now contribute to a massive 10% of the UK charts.
With research analysts IDC predicting mobile music downloads will overtake online by 2010 and Frost and Sullivan predicting the European full-track download market will be worth USD3.8 billion in 2009, the potential for mobile music in Ireland is clear.
Robert Finnegan, Managing Director for 3 said: Were delighted our music sales are contributing to the mainstream charts, this signifies a significant shift in the way consumers are buying and listening to music. The mobile music market is one of the biggest growth areas in the world, you only have to look at the success our sister companies are having to see the massive potential for 3s music services in Ireland. Everyone has a mobile phone and as 3 brings more sophisticated music handsets and services to the market, well be challenging for the number one spot in digital music sales. Dick Doyle, Director General of IRMA, said, Consumer purchasing is changing dramatically and we intend to keep our chart fresh by introducing downloads to mirror this changing market place. Having 3 involved will make a significant difference to the chart results.
