Samsung F510 (SGH-F510)

Back in December, we had a first glimpse of the Samsung SGH-F500. At that point it appeared that the F500 had DVB-H capabilities (according to Samsung) - well, in fact the F500 can't receive DVB-H, but the F510 can.

If you're not familiar with DVB-H, it's a variant of the DVB-T broadcast standard used in terrestrial digital TV (e.g. Freeview in the UK). A few handsets already support this, such as the Samsung P910 and Nokia N92. See our writeup on the Nokia N92 for a brief explanation of DVB-H. Of course, you'll need to live in an area with DVB-H reception.. so most of the UK (for example) is currently out of luck.

Because the F510 is basically just an F500 with added DVB-H, the other specifications are pretty much the same, but because the SGH-F510 is such an unusual device, it's worth running through them quickly again.

The Samsung SGH-F510 has a novel dual-front design. On one side is a somewhat conventional handset with a numeric keypad and a 176x220 pixel display.. on the other side is a multimedia device with a large 2.4'' 240x320 pixel display. The F510 has a hinged mechanism so that it can be stood upright to watch TV or video clips. There is also a 2 megapixel camera, a comprehensive media player, 410Mb of internal memory (expandable with microSD), Bluetooth and all of the other stuff you'd expect.

Usefully, the Samsung F510 is a 3G device with UMTS and HSDPA high-speed data, in addition to GPRS and EDGE. This means that the SGH-F510 will also be a practical device for watching streaming video from a 3G provider.

The design is a clever way of getting around the problem of having a large screen while still maintaining usability. In fact, it's a little surprising that no other manufacturer has gone down this route. And the clever dual face design is certain to give the SGH-F510 a great big ''wow'' factor.

Certainly the Samsung F510 is an attractive alternative to the competition, especially the Nokia N95. At present we do not have an anticipated launch date for the F510 nor any guide pricing.. but this is a premium handset in terms of features, so don't expect to it to be cheap!
