Sony Ericsson to Acquire UIQ

As its only remaining major licensee, Sony Ericsson has today announced an agreement in principal to acquire UIQ Technology AB from its parent company Symbian Ltd. The deal, which is clearly a strategic move on Sony Ericsson's part, is expected to be completed over the next few months.

The UIQ user interface, developed and licensed by UIQ Technology, powers Sony Ericsson's smartphone range, including the new P990, M600, and W950 devices. Though other manufacturers such as Motorola and Nokia have employed UIQ in the past, Sony Ericsson is by far the largest licensee. Once the sale is completed, Symbian Ltd. will be left to focus on the Symbian OS, which powers not only UIQ, but also Nokia's S60 user interface, among others.

Sony Ericsson state that UIQ Technology will be run as a separate business subsidiary of the main company and will continue with its current management team, and that UIQ will continue to be openly available for license to other manufacturers on equal terms.
