SonyEricsson - Z520 Review

Z520

13th June 2005

The Sony Ericsson Z520 can be seen as the replacement for the Z500, a handset that was limited in release to North America. It's a fairly basic clamshell camera phone with Bluetooth and quad band GSM that will be available as the Z520a in North America, Z520c in mainland China and Z520i internationally.

Indeed, this is a fairly minor upgrade to the existing handset. The screen is basically the same as the Z500, being a 128x160 pixel panel in 65,000 colours, plus a smaller external display. The camera is a similar VGA resolution device too. However, the Z520 does now come with Bluetooth, quad band GSM (instead of tri-band) and a very much improved battery life giving an impressive maximum of 9 hours talktime.

Overall though, the Z520 is pretty dull technologically, even if it is rather pretty to look at. The 128x160 pixel panel is too small, when these days other manufacturers are shipping 176x220 pixel units as standard, plus VGA resolution cameras are starting to become rare. However, the Z520 is likely to be pretty inexpensive when it comes out. There's a rather pointless media player than can play back MP3s.. except with just 16Mb of memory you are unlikely to be able to fit much on the Z520.
