SonyEricsson - W600 Review

W600

13th June 2005

The Sony Ericsson W600i is the second Sony Ericsson phone to bear the ''Walkman'' brand name, originally slated for North America only, Sony Ericsson have now decided to release the W600 worldwide. Based on the Sony Ericsson S600, the W600a has a 176x220 pixel rotating display, 3D graphics acceleration, plus 256Mb of memory and MP3 and AAC playback capabilities.

The internal memory should be enough for about 4 CDs worth of music when ripped as CD-quality MP3s - not exactly an iPod killer, but that's about the same amount of memory as you'd find in a typical small MP3 player. The W600i comes with built-in stereo speakers, or you can use a stereo headset. Like the S600, the W600i also comes with Bluetooth and it features the same Disc2Phone software found in the W800i.

The W600a has a built-in FM radio and a 1.3 megapixel camera too. Usefully, the W600i comes with EDGE support for high-speed download of tracks (where available). And like the S600, there's a web browser, email client and PIM functionality.

Yes, it's almost identical to the S600 in every way except for more memory, different software and the Walkman branding, but it's an extremely attractive phone and the inclusion of EDGE is definitely a good idea. Sony Ericsson say that the W600i can play up to 30 hours of music with the phone off, or 15 with the phone on.
