Nokia - N75 Review

N75

26th September 2006

The Nokia N75 is an 3G UMTS/WCDMA clamshell phone aimed at the US market.

It looks familiar, in fact in looks very much like the Nokia 7390 which is aimed at the rest of the world, and indeed they're both competing for pretty much the same audience but in different markets.

As we said, the Nokia N75 is 3G device but unlike European UMTS phones, this only supports the 850/1900 MHz frequencies used in North America, but it's also a quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 device with EDGE and GPRS so it can be used worldwide. Inside is a 2.4'' 240x320 pixel display in 16 million colours and VGA resolution subcamera, and there's a 2 megapixel camera on the outside along with a large 1.36'' 128x160 pixel external display and a set of media controls. Memory on the Nokia N75 is expandable with microSD cards up to a maximum of 2Gb, in addition to the 40Mb already onboard. There's Bluetooth, 3D audio and an FM radio integrated into the N75 too.

Unlike the 7390, the Nokia N75 is a Symbian S60 smartphone, with a wide range of software including a web browser, email client, Microsoft Office document viewer, PDF viewer, a photo and video editors and a wide range of personal information management features too.
Nokia say that this is the smallest and lightest N series device to date, but at 124 grams (4.3 ounces) and 95x52x20mm (3.7 x 2.0 x 0.8 inches) it's hardly lightweight.

The biggest surprise is that this handset isn't aimed at European markets, although it doesn't mean that there won't be a version of the N75 for Europe at a later date. UMTS 3G devices are still a very small market in North America, but the N75 should certainly be good enough to gain some converts.
Nokia say that the N75 should be available in the fourth quarter of 2006.

What happened to the Nokia N94? And what happens after the Finns make the Nokia N99? In any case, Nokia say that the N95 should be available sometime in the first quarter of 2007, although we wouldn't be surprised if that slipped a little.
