The Nokia 7280 is a phone, honestly it is, although it doesn't look like any phone we've seen before. In fact, the 7280 has so many radical features it's hard to know where to start.
In physical terms, this is a pen format phone measuring 115x32x19mm and weighing just 84 grams. There are no number keys on the 7280, everything is either voice activated or uses the minimal keypad and ''rotator'' supplied. There's an unusual 104x208 pixel display in 65,000 colours and a VGA resolution camera.
The 7280 is a tri-band GSM phone with GPRS and an XHTML browser (which must be interesting to use on that screen). It can connect to a PC, Mac or one of a myriad of accessories (such as a very cool wireless image headset) via Bluetooth, and it also has infra-red capabilities. Nokia have squeezed an FM radio and speakerphone in too.
We've seen elements on the 7280 design in other phones.. the unusual pen format reminds us of the Haier P5 and P6 pen phones, and the keypadless design is reminiscent of the Xelibri 8 fashion phone.
There are some elements that we think the Nokia 7280 is lacking in though. We really feel that an MP3 player and removable memory would be a huge plus for this type of device, and surely a megapixel camera wouldn't be too difficult? If they'd have managed that, then we feel that the 7280 would be darned near perfect. However, this is still an impressive and interesting phone, even if it won't be to everyone's tastes.
